What Is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving your website’s visibility on search engines. SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, involves making specific changes to your site to get more visibility on the search engines. Here, visibility is defined as non-paid (or organic) visits coming from the search engines, including Google, Bing, or Yahoo. A site can get more visitors promoted via:

  • On-Page Optimization. This refers to the practice of optimizing specific aspects of a web page in order to improve the relevant search traffic that the web page is able to receive. In this case, optimization would include the creation of relevant title tags and meta descriptions, the addition of the target keywords, and overall improvements to the content that is relatable to the described topic.
  • Off-Page: This refers to the practice of enhancing a website’s domain authority through a) gaining backlinks from other relevant and reputable sites, and b) making your website more authoritative and relevant to specific searches in the eyes of search engines so as to positively, result-wise, position your site in the search engines.
  • Technical SEO: This involves optimizing a website’s design, structure, and technical elements (i.e., server, speed, and mobile optimization) to improve the website’s position on the result pages.

Implementing a combination of techniques will help a website improve its positioning on a search results page, which will help grow website visitors and potential business.
